Fixing First Layer Problems

Ninety percent of print failures are decided in the first sixty seconds. A good first layer looks like a smooth, continuous sheet — lines fused together, slightly squished, no gaps and no ridges. Here's how to read yours.

Reading the first layer

  • Separate strands, like ribbons laid side by side: nozzle too far from the bed. Lower your Z-offset in small steps (0.02mm at a time).
  • See-through, rippled, or the nozzle plowing: too close. Raise the Z-offset slightly.
  • Sticks in some spots, peels in others: the bed isn't level relative to the nozzle path — re-run leveling, and check for a warped plate or debris under the sheet.
  • Won't stick anywhere: usually a dirty plate. Wash with dish soap and hot water — alcohol alone smears finger oils around.

The order to fix things

  1. Clean the plate with soap and water; dry with a lint-free cloth.
  2. Level the bed (or run auto-leveling) at printing temperature — beds move when hot.
  3. Dial Z-offset with a live-adjust while printing a one-layer test square.
  4. Only then touch slicer settings: first layer height 0.2–0.28mm, speed 20–30mm/s, bed temp per material (PLA 55–60°C, PETG 70–80°C).

If leveling won't hold from one print to the next, the cause is usually mechanical — worn bed springs, loose gantry rollers, or a failing sensor — not your technique.
